I used a mod called 'Settlement Raid Mod' to trigger all types of raids. and I was shocked that the entire North East and South West Buildings were compromised (aka monsters and badguys spawned there)

I spent thousands of concrete on walls which never stops the enemy from coming in. The only way to counter the inside spawners is by spamming turrets, which completely svcks the fun out of building bases.

Nordhagen has a spawn inside the settlement on the beach to the south. And enemies spawn in the dunes to the north. The Castle has only ever been attacked at the main gate. Greentop is only ever attacked from one side to the east. Oberland enemies spawn beyond the tree line just off the road to the east and down the cliffs to the south.

1. #4 Vault 88 Spawn Fix mod. Created by: Andromeda If you’re annoyed by the way the enemies spawn in Vault 88 and want to solve that, here is your fix. This mod changes the spawn locations for the enemies to be right at the front of your doors, rather than close. This can obviously save some time, so we use always use it.
2. If you build a tower in an actual settlement the enemies will spawn around thier general spawn point. So they either appaer in the closest floor level or actually embedded in the floor and you need to remove the flooring to get to them.
3. Also some of these mods are not compatible with one another, so be sure to read the installation notes before mix and matching. Without further ado, here are our ten favorite Fallout 4 settlement.
