- People with pacemakers can continue their usual sexual activity. Remember your pacemaker when you arrive at the airport or other public places with security screening. Metal detectors won’t damage your pacemaker, but they may detect the metal in your device. At the airport, let the TSA agent know that you have a pacemaker.

Hello,
Occasionally a member will ask about the possible effects of lightening strikes on their pacemaker. I do not know about all pacemakers, but I think mine got a good test last week and it passed with flying colors. As a result, I have reached the conclusion that unless I get a direct hit by lightening it probably will not bother my pacemaker, not that I would expect to know if that happened. If you are interested, below are some details of what that caused me to think this.
On the morning of 9-2-10, my wife and I were in our computer-TV room. There was the loudest sharpest noise you can imagine outside the window. We looked at each other and asked what that was and my wife replied, 'I don't know but it turned off the TV.' About that time, I noticed my computer was off also. This started us to checking to see what was no longer working.
We then found the TV and computer no longer worked. Further checking showed a digital clock that sat on top of the TV that had been stopped for about a year was again working. Two battery operated indoor-outdoor thermometers (on opposite sides of the house) were showing minus 40 degrees for inside and outside temperature. Finally, I thought to check my pacemaker and I still had a steady heartbeat of 80 BPM (the low set point on my PM).
I carried my computer to the repair shop and sure enough, it had been rendered useless. The motherboard was no longer working, although all other components checked out okay. I got a replacement computer and then learned that the box for my DSL service was destroyed. Getting a replacement from CenturyLink, my service provider has been a chore and that is the reason I am just now telling my story.
All of the affected items were about 6 feet from where I was sitting. Further checking and thinking about this makes me believe all of these items were destroyed by what I guess to be a potent electromagnetic field created by lightening. I base this mainly on the fact that when we heard loud noise, the lights did not flicker, no circuit breakers were tripped, and all of the items have a printed circuit board. Some of the items that no longer worked were plugged into wall sockets and some of the items were battery operated, and not plugged into anything. In addition, the monitor, printer and all other computer peripherals continue to work fine.
One question that we have been asked by several people was 'were there any storms in your area at the time?' We had thunderstorms in the general area but none closer than 10 miles according the weather map on TV.
If any of you whiz kids want to guess what we may have experienced I will be grateful.
